Looking Back in Time

I want the viewer to be transported into the wonderful, ethereal nature of nebulae through my use of colour and texture and to think about how incredibly vast, mysterious, and beautiful space is when you start to look closely into it. Nebulae are one of my favourite phenomena, and I love that it is ever-changing; sometimes slow, sometimes incredibly fast! The title, Looking Back in Time" is a reference to the fact that light takes an incredibly long time to reach our eyes from space, sometimes billions of years, so everything we observe is actually very far in the distant past, and I find that fact rather poignant, and maybe this is why humans are so fixated on their own pasts? I've chosen 1/2" plywood for this one because I wanted it to be strong enough to take the method through which I'm creating these "explosive" forms since I'm trying to replicate the way the universe creates itself, which at the scale of space, is far from a delicate process. I've also chosen this plywood for the underlying, subtle texture of it, which is not immediately seen until you get close to it, which to me, represents the dark matter underlying everything in creation, subtly affecting everything created on top of it. I've chosen these inks because I like how they interact with each other and how they may change over time, like the universe itself. This painting also glows in the dark!
Where it's been: This painting has been hung in a group show called "Chromatic Explorations" at ARCAC's Artsplace in Annapolis Royal in the Summer of 2023. It is a precursor piece to a solo show I will have in late 2024.

Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
